Amos Perrine’s Top 2011 Films

January 1, 2012 by steve fesenmaier

Since he sees more films, especially new ones, in NYC and elsewhere, I feel that his Top Ten list is more interesting than my own which I will work on this week.

Tree of Life (US)
Midnight in Paris (US)
Certified Copy (France)
A Separation (Iran)
Melancholia (Czech Republic)
Mysteries of Lisbon (France)
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (Belgium)
Tuesday, After Christmas (Romania)
Meeks Cutoff (US)
Pina (Germany)

Special Notes:

1) Edward Yang’s 1991 masterwork “A Brighter Summer Day” was finally
released in this country in 2011. I first saw it at MoMA  in 2000 when
”Yi Yi”  from was released. A marvelous 4 hour picture.
2) “Cave of Forgotten Dreams” is Werner Herzog’s documentary on the
32,000 year old cave drawings in France. While the film’s narration
was cumbersome, the images are spellbinding.
3) Film event of the year was the Film Society’s retrospective of
Edward Yang, who died in 2007.
4) Two pictures that were on quite a lot of ten lists, “Hugo” and
“Drive”, I found extremely flat and uninvolving.
5) The most interesting acting I saw all year was Albert Brooks in the
otherwise forgettable “Drive.”
6) The fourth season of “Breaking Bad” was better than 99% of the
movie released.
7) 76% of the movie gross receipts in the US were from: comic books,
cartoon and sequels.

Many thanks, again, for Mr. Perrine’s comments. I hope the film festival shows some of them! Fred
