Like most communities in WV, there are no commercial movie theaters in Pocahontas County. Thanks to Matt Turner, the librarian at Hillsboro, there is now a place to see movies – the Buckeye Drive-In. (more…)

Down in Number 5 – 2010 Student Academy Award Winner

I saw a great new film about WV called “Down in Number 5″, directed by Kim Spurlock and starring Michael Meredith (Martin). The film tells the true story of a coal miner dying from black lung who has to find someone to take care of his son with Down Syndrome. The acting by Mr. Meredith was great, as was the man with Down Syndrome.

James Rutenbeck came to WV many years ago and directed his first documentary in Widen, Clay County called “Company Town.” ( You can purchase the DVD at jrutenbeck@gmail.com.) Years latter he returned with his film about a contemporary traveling preacher, “Raise the Dead,” ending up in McDowell County.
John Lilly wins national contest – acoustic division

John Lilly, one of WV’s finest musicians and a person who has helped many WV filmmakers, providing music and inspiration, has just won the national “Rock the Highway,” acoustic division. He previously won the national Hank Williams songwriting contest for “best HW style song” several years ago. (more…)
In the Company’s Hands – lost WV labor film great success

Director Jack Kelly and his wife Marla flew to Charleston last Friday to introduce his 1987 film, made for WVPBS, “In the Company’s Hands.” A good audience attended the event which was the conclusion of events co-sponsored by the WV Labor History Week Coalition. The South Charleston Museum Foundation did a great job welcoming the Kelly’s and an audience that loves WV labor history. (more…)
