Sam Shapiro is one of my fav librarians in the world. I met him years ago during a visit to Charlotte. His library, Public Library of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, had been chosen as the “best in the country” shortly before our visit. Over the years, we have worked together on several projects including trying to plan a “WV Film Festival” for his libray since so many people who live in Charlotte are from WV.
I wrote a story about his silent film program that presented one of WV’s earliest films, “Tol’able David.” A local musician played the piano for the event, Etyan Uslan. As it turns out, Mr. Uslan has a mother who works as a librarian at the Cabell County Public Library. I have since worked with her on showing films about Jewish people in WV, etc.
Sam told me about “The Night of the Hunter – A Biography of a Film.” a new book about WV’s greatest film, “The Night of the Hunter.” I often tell people about another great book on the making of “Hunter” called “Heaven and Hell to Play With: The Filming of The Night of the Hunter” which I have on my desk. Shapiro teaches a film course at the local UN Charlotte and programs a popular film event at the library.
I hope that some day Sam and I can get together a WV film series for his local library system.
