Ray Schmitt with one of his films, UFOs in Hardy County, with pictures of supermassive blacks on either side
Ray Schmitt has been using his film camera to explore, explain, and enjoy his universe for over 30 years. He has won many awards, and profiled many people including himself in “Six Months.” He has begun “Synchronicity,” a new film looking at the meaning of “synchronicity” in his life since the death of his wife and co-filmmakers, Judy. You can preview a trailer for the film here. He is interviewing several people, exploring the world of contemporary physics to see what science has to say about synchronicity.
I hope that Ray looks in to the current obsession with “entanglement” which involves a strange link between particles separated by a distance in the quantum universe. The theories of the quantum world have influenced a great deal of thinking in the arts since the theory was invented. Presently theories of everything like string theory are trying to merge the Einsteinian world of relativity and the quantum world.
The philosophy of Spinoza posits that everything is synchronicity – that cause and effect is just a human creation. Many people including myself believe that Spinoza had some very good ideas, including his co-invention of calculus.
Good luck to Ray! I know that everyone eventually believes in “synchronicity” – that there is a higher power that bring different parts of the universe together in unpredicable ways. Obviously, the evolution of life from a non-living universe proves that the universe itself is evolving away from disorder toward a new form of order.
One recent idea I have had on this subject is that there are approximately as many super-massive black holes in the middle of galaxies as there are people on the earth – six billion. Given the known rarity of intelligent life in the universe, perhaps we could say that each person is as unique in our universe as are the supermassive black holes that have helped formed the galaxies. Humans may be small entities compared to supermassive black holes, but we are still unique, and add to the universe our awareness, love, and lives that not even the black holes do.
Ray with friend Pamela Mittelstadt in the Yucatan
Ray traveled to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico recently with his friend Pamela Mittelstadt to retrace his spiritual journey which started there exactly a year ago. After Ray’s wife and film partner Judy Schmitt passed away in September 2007, Ray was invited to visit with some friends in Mexico. Along the way he met several other widows who had lost their husbands and who shared advice with Ray about grieving the loss of a loved one. There were several “synchronistic” encounters during his recent trip as well, including meeting a Reiki Master and Mayan astrologer from the Netherlands. Ray intends to include some of this footage in his newest film “Synchronicity.”

I loaned my copy to Ray of “The End of Science” by John Horgan, a great book about science, showing how little we actually know about our world as of now. The book starts with an interview with a friend of mine, Paul K. Feyerabend, who wrote the landmark essay, “Against Method,” rejecting the Popper-Kuhn simplistic ideas about how science works. Below is an e-mail communication between director Ray Schmitt and author Horgan. I want to read some of Horgan’s newer books myself.- Steve

Hello John, Thank you so much for your comments about our film trailer. I am so happy that you watched it! We are still shooting and editing. I am glad you are thinking of synchronicity. I have just begun reading what Jung says about it. It just seems like this is something that is going on increasingly. So many people that I talk to are experiencing this in their lives. Perhaps we are more open to our interconnectiveness. I am looking forward to reading “Rational Mysticism” and would love to know more about what you think of synchronicity. I hope you will be writing about it. I would be glad to send you a rough cut of my film whenever we get it to that stage. Thanks again,Ray—– Original Message —– From: John Horgan To: rschmitt Sent: Saturday, March 14, 2009 2:48 PMSubject: Re: “The End of Science”
Ray, your film is very moving. I’ve been thinking about synchronicity a lot later, ane sensing it in my life, so getting your film I supposed is another example of it. All the best, John

Subject: “The End of Science”Dear John, I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your book “The End of Science” and how much I learned from it. I was amazed at how you could define, describe, compare and contrast all the complex scientific theories in an entertaining way. I just ordered “Rational Mysticism: Spirituality Meets Science in the Search for Enlightenment”. If you have the opportunity I would appreciate your viewing a short trailer (select HQ–high quality option) of a personal film I am working on called “Synchronicity.” You will understand why I found your book so interesting and informative and why I want to read “Rational Mysticism.” Of course, I would love to interview you for my film if that would ever become a possibility. http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&hl=en-GB&v=QtJwdYYCqEM Sincerely,Ray Schmitt
