My old friend from Minneapolis has a new book coming out – “Documentary Film: A Very Short Introduction” from Oxford University Press. She sent me this list and said, “Here is my top 100 page from that book . It’s not my personal top favorites but a recommended list of 100 films that taken together provide a decent education in what is a doc…. !”

 100 Great Documentaries

These are some documentaries that are widely seen and discussed, have been at the center of controversies in some cases, in others provide valuable teaching resources, and are also accessible. You can use the index to the book and other books mentioned in the references, imdb.com, your local library, Netflix, Google and the Library of Congress to find out more about why these films have attracted attention and esteem. Viewing this collection will set you up nicely with a context to watch your latest favorite, argue with this list, and build your own top 100.
