Matt: I would start with Riesling from either Germany or Washington State. Look for labels such as Chateau Ste. Michelle or Dr. Loosen. Both of these wines are priced around $10 a bottle and should keep you from needing the Sprite. Enjoy and thanks for reading.

product but I just havn't locked in on one yet...any

I'm with you Sandman. Blended wines are much more interesting to me than single varietals and you're correct: they don't need to be expensive or difficult to acquire. They can also be combinations of wines other than the standard Bordeaux blends too. I really like the blend of grenache, syrah and mourvedre like the meritage comprising Cotes du Rhone.

Hey Cookie - There are many vinifera purists who may look down their noses at these blended beauties, but I am not among them.

My first experience with such a creation was August Sebastiani's 1969 Burgundy. At $4.49 retail it is without question the best value I have ever encountered in a red table wine. I bought cases of it. Ah, as is most often the case, this one was typically short lived and in my effort hold on to it, I ended up losing a couple of cases. I nearly cried when I realized the error. The old aphorism that 'Life is uncertain, so eat dessert first' never rang more true.

The most exquisite red that I have ever enjoyed was the Dominus 2000 Meritage that I had while being awed by the experience of Tampa's Berne Steakhouse. Perhaps my palate is not sophisticated enough to appreciate them but the '61 Haut Brion and '66 Lafite that I had been priviledged to drink were not nearly as memorable.

John, Those were the days! Remember going up "camp" and all the special culinary delights we were routinely exposed to and never appreciated? It's nice to be able to reconstruct some of those dishes which are not only delicious, but also allow us to remember, the mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles and cousins with whom we shared those experiences and to celebrate and relive those wonderful years.

We have adapted Lucille D'Annunzio's recipe to the Kansas flatlands situation by including a hint of fresh tomato and sauteing the garlic a bit before begining. I am glad to see that you are still using Aunt Notie's rendition. Of course, I always use hot peppers from the pots at the end of my swiming pool.
Your recipe took me back to the picnics we had with the family while we were youngsters. I can never remember a picnic with someone bringing a teala.

You can also add a little Italian sausage in between layers to spice it up. if you do this, you might want to open up a big zin.
