Abortion bill: How they voted

March 9, 2010 by Alison Knezevich

Usually when a bill goes through a committee, legislators do a voice vote on the issue — and their votes aren’t recorded on paper.

Yesterday’s House health committee discussion on the ultrasound abortion bill was  heated at times (and produced a most interesting Quote of the Day). When it came time to vote, legislators did a roll call, meaning their names were called and their votes recorded.

The measure passed 16-9. Here is the roll call of the committee’s 25 members:

Troy Andes, R-Putnam: Y

Larry Border, R-Wood (Minority Vice Chair): Y

Tom Campbell, D-Greenbrier:  N

Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson: Y

Jeff Eldridge, D-Lincoln: Y

Barbara Fleischauer, D-Monongalia: N

Barbara Hatfield, D-Kanawha (Vice Chair): N

Patrick Lane, R-Kanawha: Y

Tiffany Lawrence, D-Jefferson: N

Carol Miller, R-Cabell: Y

Jonathan Miller, (Minority Vice Chair) R-Berkeley: Y

Mike Manypenny, D-Taylor: Y

Charlene Marshall, D-Monongalia: N

Clif Moore, D-McDowell: N

Rick Moye, D-Raleigh: Y

Don Perdue, D-Wayne (Chair): N

David Perry, D-Fayette: Y

Linda Phillips, D-Wyoming: N

Dan Poling, D-Wood: Y

Ralph Rodighiero, D-Logan: Y

Ruth Rowan, R-Hampshire: Y

Sharon Spencer, D-Kanawha: N

Margaret Staggers, D-Fayette: Y

this is an unnecessary bill and inconveniences the doctors to an extraordinary extent but if it makes people feel good…………

Conservatives want the power to force a woman to reproduce against her will. Forcing a woman to reproduce against her will is something I thought I’d only see in a communist/collectivist-type society.

But, then again, when you think about it, that’s the sort of society these conservative Christians truly want. They want the power to force people to live according to their warped interpretation of the Bible.

In my view, they can go straight to Hades. Individual rights still count for something in this country and these religious conservatives better get used to the idea.

It’s a woman’s exclusive right to determine if and when she wants to reproduce. Any law which encumbers this right is immoral and unacceptable.

It’s sad how these legislators will vote for something because in West Virginia it’s a good thing to do politically when personally they are pro-choice and could care less about the ultra-sound option before an abortion. Politics is perception and I guess you want to be on the correct side of it with voters.

I’m glad nine members actually had the courage and probably political safety (other than maybe Tom Campbell, whose constituents in Greenbrier County will probably go after him for this vote) to vote against this bill.

This bill serves no good purpose. I admire the Legislators who had the courage to stand up for common sense and a woman’s right to keep the state out of her business.

To vashti; I would rather incovience a doctor than kill an inocent unborn baby, how dare you , shame on you.
To DW; No where in this bill do I see anything about tying up a naked women and raping her untill she becomes pregnant. She used her freedom of choice when she took her clothes off and said yes.
If you want to see who is going straight to Hades, just look in the mirror.
God has plainly said that you would be better off with a millstone around you neck and tossed into the ocean. And BTW, before you respond about the rape babies, they are still inocent, and represent less than 1/2 of one per cent of abortions per yr. Real good excuse for killing millions of other babies.
I have printed out the list of voters on this bill and have put it on the fridge. I will read it every election day for the rest of my life. How soon we forget if we don’t write it down. To the polictians who voted against this modest bill I say SHAME on you. I say a woman should have to name her baby, provide a decent funeral for it, complete with a headstone that says ” KILLED BY MY MOTHER” and a copy of the obits sent to her every year on MOTHERS DAY.

  6. Palerider1 says:

I forgot to add,PLEASE, PLEASE,PLEASE, for the sake of all the unborn babies that are going to be killed. Do the same as I have done, hit the print button and put this list of baby killers on your fridge. PLEASE.
