House, Senate adopt resolution for coal
State lawmakers want West Virginia’s congressional members to “resist and oppose” what they call “efforts to undermine the future of West Virginia coal.”
This afternoon, both the House of Delegates and state Senate adopted resolutions (HR 402 and (SR 407) supporting the coal industry.
Gov. Manchin had to amend his special-session call to add this item.
From the resolution:
Whereas, Recent events at the federal level, most notably the debate over “cap and trade” legislation in Congress and obscure regulatory actions by the Environmental Protection Agency, are casting a shadow of doubt and uncertainty over the future of the coal industry in West Virginia.
A copy will be sent to each member of the state’s Congressional delegation.

Now we see that not only do our delegates and senators bury their heads in the sand individually on confronting the future of coal but they do it collectively as well. This quote from the House resolution expresses the wrong-headedness so well: “the House of Delegates, the Senate, the Governor and West Virginia’s congressional delegation must work together to secure the future of the coal industry, and with it the future of the State;” Even now, nearly a decade into the 21st century, our “leaders” can see no future for our state any different from its past: absolute fealty to King Coal. Read it again - the future of coal is the future of West Virginia…and vice versa.
