Berger nomination one step closer

October 1, 2009 by Andrew Clevenger

berger.jpgThe U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved Irene C. Berger’s nomination to the federal bench in West Virginia’s Southern District at an executive business meeting today. Berger, a Kanawha Circuit Judge since 1994, was nominated by President Barack Obama to fill the vacancy created when U.S. District Judge David A. Faber assumed senior status at the end of 2008.

Berger now faces confirmation by the entire U.S. Senate. She and several other judicial nominees fielded questions from senators during a committee hearing in Washington last month.

Justice Berger is a fine, upstanding and exemplary example of what a Judge should be. She is a true professional in every sense of the word. I commend President Obama for recognizing the skills Justice Berger possesses. She will make a fine Federal Judge for West Virginia’s Southern District.

Congratulations, to Judge Berger! I know that she will continue to demonstrate integrity and fairness on the bench. I wish her all of the continued success that the legal system has to offer.

I met Judge Berger in 1991 after my freshman year in college I was working as an intern for Kanawha Co. Prosecutors office during the era of Bill Forbes. Judge Berger was an inspiration in my life and while I was there she treated me with such respect even though I was just a young college student trying to soak up as much knowledge as I could. Myself like Judge Berger are both African American as well as being from the southern coalfield area and she gave me the drive to be the person that I am today. It is tough being a young African American male in the state of WV I left the state in 2000 and I currently am a school teacher for at risk troubled youth in the state of Arizona. I just hope that others can appreciate what Judge Berger has done for women, African American women as well as African Americans in the state of WV. Much respect Judge Berger do your thing!!!! Help bring others up to your level, give back. PEACE & LOVE
