Anti-discrimination bill is dead

April 7, 2009 by Alison Knezevich

rainbowflag.jpgI hear that proponents of a measure to add sexual orientation to the state’s anti-discrimination laws have told supporters the bill (SB238) is officially dead.

The bill passed the Senate last month, but it was never put on the agenda of the House Judiciary Committee.

Supporters say the Iowa Supreme Court decision to legalize gay marriage there — ironically– hurt their efforts here because it distracted from the discrimination issue. When the decision came down last week, remember, House Minority Leader Tim Armstead urged delegates to take action by amending our state constitution.

We’ll have more details and comments in tomorrow’s paper.

The West Virginia House of Delegates — making West Virginia the “last place” you’d want to live.

The Iowa supreme court decision argument is a cop out. If these delegates won’t support us, they can be darn sure that we won’t support them.
