No tax amnesty for W.Va. gun buyers, after all

March 17, 2010 by John McCoy

gunmoneyFor West Virginia’s gun owners, the joy turned out to be short-lived.

Just two days after the Legislature approved a one-day October tax holiday for gun purchases, Gov. Joe Manchin said he’d probably veto it.

“That gives me heartburn,” Manchin said, referring to the loss of an estimated $25,000 in potential tax revenue.

It will be interesting to see how lawmakers respond to Manchin’s disapproval. The bill passed the House of Delegates 96-2 and the Senate 25-9. It takes just a simple majority vote by each house to override a gubernatorial veto.

If legislators were truly serious when they passed the tax-holiday bill, it stands to reason they’d be equally serious about an override.

This is an absolute stupid bill designed to appease the NRA during an election cycle. How can anyone justify this law? I agree with the governor on this one but then again, he’s not running for reelection either.

I agree fully with Gov. Manchin. I am an NRA member and Republican, however I agree fully with his analysis of the situation. I don’t think any NRA member should support this bill designed solely to put the Gov. in a bad light and gain very little for gun owners – The Govenor will support gun owners and hunters when needed – the state economic situation must be first priority given the Obama administrations hell-bent goal of killing coal and the lack of support from our WV representatives in Washington – 2 thumbs up for Gov. Manchin
