Utah coal mine shut down for ‘hot spot’

My buddy Mike Gorrell at the Salt Lake Tribune has the story that a Utah coal mine has been closed since late last week because of elevated levels of potentially dangerous carbon monoxide gas. Mike reports:

The Dugout Canyon coal mine in Carbon County has been shut down since Thursday night because of a “hot spot” that produced elevated levels of potentially dangerous carbon monoxide gas.

Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) officials issued a closure order on the mine, operated by Arch Coal Co. subsidiary Canyon Fuels Co., after carbon monoxide levels increased in a mined-out area that was being sealed off.

During the weekend, MSHA spokeswoman Amy Louviere said, a mine rescue team was sent into the area but was unable to “extinguish the fire.”

There’s a press release here from Arch Coal.
