Manchin heads to White House on mountaintop removal

manchinobama.jpg

This just in from Gov. Joe Manchin’s communications director Matt Turner:

Gov. Joe Manchin released this statement this evening about the
Environmental Protection Agency’s letters regarding certain types of
mining:

“After learning about the letters sent today by the EPA regarding
mining, I discussed concerns about the impact of this decision with the
head of our state Department of Environmental Protection. As a result of
those discussions, this evening I spoke with Nancy Sutley, chair of the
White House Council on Environmental Quality. She has been gracious
enough to meet with me tomorrow in Washington to discuss the issues
raised by today’s decision by the EPA.

“I look forward to meeting with her and sharing our concerns and finding
out the intent of this ruling. I believe the interpretation of the
letters may be different than the intent, and I am confident that
reasonable people can come together to find a solution where there might
be differences.

“I will share with them everything our state is doing to meet our
nation’s energy needs and the jobs that are dependent on this industry.
I will do everything I possibly can to fight for every job in West
Virginia.”

I’d like to see him fighting for every mountain and coal mining community in WV, too.

If he was truly fighting for jobs then he would have stopped mountaintop removal himself.

It only takes a fraction of the labor as a deep mine and it is mostly nonunion.

How sad! Any time something good happens for our state, the Governor rushes immediately to try to undo it.

The governor may not have to make that trip afterall.

“I am confident that reasonable people can come together to find a solution where there might be differences.”

Can’t remember hearing those words when I heard the first blasts on the mountain that I live on.

We should not expect any better of Manchin.

The governor is a dyed- in- the-wool coal guy. He always has been.

Doesn’t Manchin worry about how this makes him look? Industry is leading government by the hand here, to the extent that a sitting governor rushes to Washington to plead for “jobs”. If nothing else, at least grudgingly accept that higher powers are finally forcing you to move in the direction you should be moving, Mr. Manchin. Here’s hoping a smile and a nice meal is all you get from White House staff.

Manchin “discussed concerns about the impact of this decision with the head of our state Department of Environmental Protection.” I wonder if the two have ever discussed the impact of the DEP’s failure to collect $2 billion in fines from Massey Energy. Or the DEP’s failure to…oh, never mind. I’m sure Manchin directed what could be a very long list.
I expect tomorrow he’ll declare a state of emergency and shut down the state. It’s time for him and DEP to understand they work for the people and not for the coal industry.

It is time that Manchin resign or be impeached. Enough is enough. He has caused more damage to the state of West Virginia and the future of West Virginia than anyone is WV history including Don Blankenship. If the US Dept. of Justice wants to make an example out of political corruption, they have the perfect suspect coming to Washington DC today.

Yesterday was a day of joy that I will never forget. Today is a day that I will always remember because a man that was elected to “serve” the people of this state is going to DC to try to suck a little more of our life blood away.

I wish we had recall in this state and we could throw that coal bum out of office! I knew the screaming would start as soon as I read what the EPA had decided to do.

I agree with Bo Webb, I wish the Dept of Justice would come down here and check out what goes on in the Capitol.

It’s time for our governor to listen and learn about truly green energy. My husband worked underground for 28 yrs and was disabled at work in 2004. He still has not received treatment and his accident was not turned into MSHA. It’s time to stop playing footsie with the coal companies and start protecting the injured miners, the communities and our families!
