You can read the TRUE story of the $1 million Buffalo Creek settlement (hint, it's a different one than the Gazette has pushed for 35 years) in the biography of Arch Moore, "ARCH" which is available in better book stores and on line.

Well I can remember the Buffalo Creek disaster.

But wasn't it declared an act of God?

Also didn't Gov. Moore make them pay before he left office?

"All too clearly the tragedy of Buffalo Creek has torn away the mask, revealing the ugly truth that powerful coal interests dominate the government, the environment, and the West Virginia way of life to the detriment of all its citizens. Discussion and action are needed now to transform King Coal, the tyrant, into Citizen Coal, the servant of all — before and not after another Buffalo Creek disaster. "

Thirty-seven years later, the tragedy continues.

At the very least, why not the Alaska model? Why not a check for every man, woman and child in the state? You'd think that would be popular enough to get politicians elected to make it happen, until you realize democracy doesn't go as far in this state as the blind subjugation of our politicians to the interests of extractive industries.
